| Fast, Abstinence and Other Acts of Penance for Lent 2012
The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as a minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday,
February 22, 2012, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.
Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light.
All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is
especially recommended.
All are encouraged to participate in "Operation Rice Bowl," which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. |
Faith Sharing for Lent
It's that time of year again…Faith Sharing for Lent!! Please give consideration to joining a group that meets once per week for the 6 weeks of Lent. The purpose of each meeting is to be better prepared for Sunday Mass by reading and understanding the scriptures as well as discussing your faith. We have varied days and times that these groups meet. Chris Mars' group meets on Sunday eve, Kate Donahue's group meets Monday eve, Craig Rickard's group meets on Tuesday evening and Imelda Kormos' group meets on Thursday mornings If
interested, please contact Amy Smith @ 215-773-9081. |
Lenten Pro-life Prayer
Father of all mercy,
We thank you for this season of grace and light.
We know that sin has blinded us.
Draw us ever closer to you, in prayer and penance.
Since you, O God, are light itself,
Give all your people a clearer understanding
Of what is sin, and what is virtue.
Grant in particular that we may see, as never
before,
The profound dignity of every human life,
Including the vulnerable unborn children.
Give us grace to defend
Our brothers and sisters in the womb
By our prayers, our words,
And our self-sacrificing actions.
We pray through Christ our Lord.
Amen |
Scripture Study: A Biblical Walk Through the Mass
During the Season of Lent Bible Study will be offered. A Biblical Walk Through the Mass will invite the participants to gain an understanding about what we say and do in the Liturgy. It will be a five week journey, every Tuesday during Lent at 7pm -- 8:30 pm from Feb. 28 to Mar. 27. Contact: Sr. Mary Catherine Chamberlain 215-659-5913 |
Invisible Children Presentation
Invisible Children is a social, political, and global movement using the transformative power of story to change lives. By inspiring youth culture to value creativity, idealism and sacrifice, the movement fuels the most effective, adaptable and innovative programs in the world.
We would like to invite you and your families to come and view a presentation by the Invisible Children crew and a member of their tour from Uganda who will share her story. We are holding the presentation at St David Upper School gym on Monday, March 26th at 7PM.
This presentation promises to be a powerful one that you will not forget. It is recommended for 5th grade and above and lasts about an hour. I hope you will all consider spreading the news about this global issue and make this a part of your Lenten Mission this season.
If you have any questions please contact Margie Regan at stdavidyouth@comcast.net, or leave a message at 215-659-7413. For more information on this movement, you can check their web page at www.invisiblechildren.com .
Please help spread the word and send this invitation to all of your friends! |
Food for the Poor
The Franciscan OFM Community feeds the poor in
Philadelphia. The Saint David Church community provides the food. We have been helping for 34 years.
Monday, February 27th will be our annual 7:30 P.M. Mass and Social. It is the first Monday of Lent and we are praying for a wonderful turnout of faithful parishioners and a large collection of food, clothing and money for the poor. This year we will be handing out bags at the Masses on February 18th and 19th with the hope of seeing them returned throughout the following week. We need non-perishable food, toilet articles, diapers, baby food, paper products and clothing.
Everything may be dropped off in Father Curran Hall between Feb. 19th and Feb. 27th, 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Checks should be made out to the Saint Francis Inn. |
